ISMAHANE POUSSIN

Ismahane Poussin is a multidisciplinary artist and/or designer based in Paris, France.

Often working across multiple mediums simultaneously, both traditional and digital, she adopts an exploratory artistic approach fueled by perpetual curiosity. She believes in the intersections between different domains and in experimenting with new processes. Her primary graphic inquiries revolve around the boundaries of various mediums and how to create within self-imposed constraints and rules of the game. Through her work, she seeks to provoke personal reflection with a strong sense of meaningness, political, social & philosophical as an approach base.
A child of the internet, she was early fascinated by the naive and vibrant aesthetics of early computers.
These images from the dawn of the digital age never leave her and serve as her primary source of inspiration.

She is also an art curator, part of Milieu Studio, a girl-runned  trio to make art collectivly efficient.

Sieste Ensemble
Visual system for the third edition of Sieste Ensemble, a collective organizing musical & visual naps. The working protocol was based on the same process as automatic writing: writing, without prior consultation, without constraint and without anticipation, fragments of sentences taken from texts read during the performance of jchsmpbnsahg, inventing random and instinctive ductus. Following this same process of trial and error, cutting, collaging, and recomposing, all of the posters were made by hand—scanning, photocopying, reprinting on tracing paper, draft sheets, and white paper.

Musafiri
Reader from the exhibition Musafiri at the HKW, Berlin.
The book is based on a system of shapes inspired by the principle of Oraliture. Often used in the work of Madame Zo, Oraliture is an Haitian notion defining the ways of transmitting informations & knowledge through other mediums than written words. It is composed of the words oral and litterature, designate oral transmission but also music, patterns, textile, etc.
By reading the contributions, we gathered recurring themes and translated them into shapes listed in a visual summary as an abstract alphabet. Every chapter is marked by a specific abstract pattern made by shapes representing the notions of the following text.

Selection of posters
Selection of various posters for cultural events.

Les courantes
Les courant•es is a short documentary produced for the exhibition “Pourvu que ça dure” (May it last) in which we attempt to capture the relationships that four artists have with their temporary studios, the emotional attachment they have to them, and the way in which movement influences their practices. This video work complements the exhibition and highlights what happens between the creative act and the act of display, in the intimacy of these fluid spaces.
The report was screened in the small room on the sixth floor of the Orion Tower during the exhibition “Pourvu que ça dure.”
